On January 13, 2011, the FDA required all manufacturers who manufacture and sell products that include Aceteminophen to warn users of potential side effects including severe liver injuries. The FDA is also proposing that the most severe warning, called the Black Box warning or Black Box label, be added to all prescription products which contain Acetaminophen. There have been many instances of people overdosing on Acetaminophen prescription pain medicine, including numerous liver failures leading to liver transplant or death. The drugs involved include common drugs such as Tylenol, Children’s Tylenol, Contac, Robitussin, Sudafed, Theraflu, Zicam, Percocet, Vicodin and Codeine. Overdoses of Acetaminophen can lead to liver failure or even liver transplant.

Unfortunately, Acetaminophen is a common ingredient in Tylenol and over 200 non-prescription over-the-counter medications.  (See the full list below.)  It has been found to cause acute liver failure also known as drug-induced acute liver failure. 

Equally unfortunate is that the public is totally unaware of the extreme dangers posed by Acetaminophen. 

The history of Acetaminophen is that it was developed in the 19th century and used as an analgesic (for pain relief) and for fever reducing purposes. It has been widely used in the United States for over 50 years. Over 100 billion Acetaminophen-containing pills are consumed worldwide each year. Unfortunately, Acetaminophen carries serious side effect risks including liver failure.

Sadly, warning labels on these over-the-counter products are completely inadequate. Consumers do not recognize the danger and are unaware of the dangers of Acetaminophen based prescriptions. There are no prior symptoms. Symptoms begin with nausea and vomiting in the first 24 hours. After another 2 or 3 days liver blood tests become highly elevated. Soon after, there can be liver failure.
