Serevent, a popular inhalation aerosol medication prescribed to treat asthma has been linked to serious side effects, including asthma related deaths, especially within the African American population. Serevent, which is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline is a beta2-receptor that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1994 and has been taken by millions of patients worldwide. Shortly after the medication was approved the occurrence of side effects became prevalent, although the medication was not recalled. Advair, also manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, is an asthma medication which is prescribed to prevent inflammation and asthma attacks by relaxing the muscles in the airways. This drug was approved by the FDA in 2000, and within a few years the Food and Drug Administration announced that the medication placed patients at risk for serious side effects including fatalities. GlaxoSmithKline conducted a Serevent study in which 36 people died due to severe asthma attacks or other Serevent related side effects. The FDA placed a warning on all Serevent packages regarding the risks associated with the medication, including the possibility of death. According to the American Lung Association, the occurrence of asthma among African Americans was 38% higher than the rate of asthma among Caucasians in 2002. In fact, recent reports have shown that asthma related deaths among African Americans account for 26 percent of asthma caused fatalities.
