A former FDA official said at an FDA hearing that Galaxo, manufacturer of Avandia withheld from FDA regulators information which implied that Avandia posed an increased risk for serious heart problems. Currently, FDA experts are debating whether or not Avandia should be pulled from the market because of these side effects including congestive heart failure, strokes, and heart attacks.
Evidence is slowly revealing that Galaxo did not provide the FDA with all the information that it knew at the time of Avandia’s risks and when it did learn of new information concerning Avandia’s risks, did not provide the FDA with that information in a timely manner.
Even the FDA criticized Galaxo’s own funded study that said Avandia isn’t linked to a higher risk of heart attacks or strokes.
At one time, Avandia had 2006 global sales of $2.5 billion. After its Black Box Warning, sales slipped to $1.2 billion in 2009. A rival drug, Actos, had sales of over $4 billion last year. Actos and Avandia lower glucose levels for 23 million Americans with Type 2 diabetes.
Interestingly, Actos has never been linked to serious cardiovascular risks.
