You may have heard about Avandia lawsuits, litigation or settlements. If you have taken Avandia, or are taking it right now, read what our Avandia lawyer has to say about this medication.

Statistics have shown that people who take Avandia will have a higher risk of a cardiovascular event, such as congestive heart disease, heart attack, or stroke – between 29 and 46% higher than if they did not take Avandia. There was a recent study released on June 28, 2010 in the JAMA of a quarter million Medicare patients which showed an increased risk of stroke, heart failure, and heart attack from patients who took Avandia. Avandia is a very risky drug for cardiovascular side effects. In spite of all the studies that state Avandia increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes Galaxo states that their own studies conclude that Avandia does not raise risks of heart attacks. Galaxo’s comments are that there are strengths and weaknesses to each study. The doctors of the JAMA study recommend that the drug be pulled from the marketplace.

The study concluded that Avandia should not be used and that doctors should be prescribing alternative drugs because Avandia increases the chance of heart attack by 28%. The study was published on June 28th, 2010 in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA).

We handle Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) side effect cases caused by Avandia. Congestive heart failure is as follows:

Heart (cardiac) Failure is not a disease in and of itself, it is the end product of a variety of insults to the heart that results in its failure as a pump.

Heart Failure is the state in which the heart is unable to pump blood at a rate sufficient to meet the metabolic requirement of the tissue. Heart failure can occur as a result of Myocardial or cardiac muscle damage.
Six out of seven patient hospitalized with CHF have a history of Coronary Artery disease (i.e. heart attack); three out of four have Hypertension, or high blood pressure, and more than half have defective heart valves or history of Diabetes.

The term "heart failure" suggest that the heart has stopped working or has "failed." This is not the case. What actually means is that the heart is working inefficiently, pumping too weakly. When this happens, fluids build up in the lungs, among other organs, creating a feeling of breathlessness.

In the United States, 75% to 80% of its roughly 5 million victims are older than 65 years old. Each year nearly 1 million people are hospitalized with CHF, 30-60% of whom are "re-admits." The CHF death rate has increased by 35% in the past quarter century, the disease is now the main cause or a contributor of nearly 53,000 US death each year according to the American Heart Association.

Symptoms include shortness of breath, swelling of the feet, weight gain; all symptoms of congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema (fluid buildup in the lungs).  Congestive heart failure is when the heart is unable to pump sufficient blood to maintain the correct circulation in the body.  Unfortunately, because the heart is unable to correctly pump, fluid builds up in the lungs.

An additional side effect is chronic renal failure or kidney failure.  Patients have developed these symptoms within one to three months after being on Avandia.  If you have had problems with your kidneys or any heart or congestive heart failure, please contact us immediately.  We and our co-counsel have hundreds of Avadia cases against the manufacturer Glaxo Smith Kline.

Side effect symptoms of the drug are blurred vision, swelling of the feet and legs.  More than six million people worldwide have been prescribed Avandia.

Additional side effects are worsening diabetic macular edema which is the swelling of the retina which can cause blurry or distorted vision, are peripheral edema, or the swelling of the legs, ankles and feet.

Side effects include:

The FDA stated it will significantly restrict Avandia use for only patients who cannot control their type 2 diabetes with any other medications. This is because of all the data and reports and studies indicating the risk of heart attack, stroke and congestive heart failure.
