WARNING: Exposure to Beryllium may lead to Beryllium disease, lung cancer, and death.

Beryllium is a metal which is commonly used in various industries throughout the United States. In fact, close to a million workers are exposed to or handle Beryllium every year in the U.S. Employees who work with electronics, ceramics, dental materials, or other product which contains metals may be at risk for serious medical problems, some of which can be fatal. If a person is exposed to the substance, they may suffer from Beryllium disease, which is also known as Berylliosis.

Beryllium dust is the most hazardous form of the substance because it can be inhaled, trapped in the lungs, and cause lung scarring. Due to the lung scarring which occurs from the Beryllium inhalation, the victim may suffer from lung cancer. Although this disease is mainly known for its devastating effects on the lungs and respiratory system, other organs may be affected due to the transportation of Beryllium through the blood.

Acute Beryllium disease may inflict people who have been exposed to large amounts of the substance for a short period of time. In addition to suffering from this condition, the victim may also experience the medical conditions listed below:

  • Contact dermatitis
  • Nasopharyngitis
  • Pneumonitis
  • Tracheobronchitis

Chronic Beryllium disease is a serious condition which, in some cases, may not occur until after the victim is no longer exposed to the substance. In many situations a physician may not be able to recognize, and therefore not diagnose, the disease for years after the patient first suffered from it.

Some symptoms which may occur as the result of either type of Beryllium disease include:

  • Coughing
  • Difficulties breathing and shortness of breath
  • Enlargement of organs, including spleen and liver
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Hypercalcemia
  • Kidney stones
  • Right heart ventricle valve problems
  • Skin lesions
  • Weight loss

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and have been exposed to Beryllium you may be at serious risk for Beryllium disease. You should discuss your concerns with your physician, and request a Beryllium Lymphocyte Proliferation Transformation test, x-rays, or a lung biopsy to assist in diagnosing your condition.

If you or a loved one has suffered as the result of Beryllium exposure, please contact a Beryllium disease attorney at Nadrich & Cohen immediately.
