One thing that seems to coincide with civilization is entertainment. If you look back on the major civilizations throughout history there has always been some culturally specific form of entertainment unique to that culture. In western civilization, this entertainment has often taken the form of aggressive sports.
From Rome’s gladiators to Cricket in Europe, aggressive sports have been a popular form of entertainment. In America, football is one of the most popular sports. Recently, evidence has come out linking concussions and head injuries in the NFL to serious neurological disorder later in life.
What is the future of one of America’s favorite pastimes? This concern has stirred up a variety of opinions. Some people argue that this evidence is no surprise and it is just part of the game. Others argue that no form of entertainment should risk the consequences that are being discussed in this issue. What do the actual football players think?
NFL Players Opinions on Brain Damage
An article featured in the San Francisco Chronicle asked this question of a few of San Francisco’s own 49ers players. Here’s what some of them said.
“We are all men before we are football players. When you walk away from the game, you don’t want to be in a position where people have to take care of you at an early age.” –Linebacker Takeo Spikes.
“That’s nothing to mess around with, especially with all the studies that are coming out of guys that aren’t that old having Alzheimer’s. It’s something they need to keep looking into. I know they’re taking the right first step.” –Guard David Baas
