In the last article on oil field accidents, we discussed an article that describes some of the positive changes in Europe’s approaches to safety in the oil field. A question that was raised at the end of that article considered the state of oil field safety in America. Does America follow the same trend as Europe.
Jobs in the oilfield are rarely found with the stereotype of being safe; and for good reason. Many of these jobs are demanding, physically and mentally. What classifies many jobs as unsafe in the oilfield is the environment more than the job demands.
Jobs in the oilfield can often mean dangerous work. Many companies that engage in drilling meet these dangers with safety regulations and concerns. In spite of many efforts to combat these dangers with safety procedures there continues to be a large number of oilfield accidents.
Jobs in the oilfield are tough, demanding and dangerous, especially for those who work directly on rigs in production. Does the danger and demand of these jobs excuse employers from providing adequate worker safety? Many of sound mind argue ‘no’ yet there are some who see this field as being exempt from certain worker safety regulations found in most fields.
