Children's Motrin and Children's Advil are over the counter children's painkillers commonly given to relieve symptoms such as fever, body aches and pain associated with the common cold, flu and other childhood illnesses. Recommended for children ages 2-11 years, Children's Motrin comes in liquid, chewable and tablet form and is recommended for children between the ages of 2 and 11. Children's Motrin has been available in the non-prescription form since 1995.

There are many potential side effects associated with taking of Children's Motrin, which include Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, asthma, swelling, hives and shock. Some of these side effects can cause severe reactions including blindness and death.

In December 2004, the parents of a 7-year-old girl filed a lawsuit against the maker of Children's Motrin as well as several distributors alleging the painkiller caused their daughter to suffer serious side effects, including blindness and SJS. Doctors treating the child blamed the child's loss of vision on Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, which she allegedly developed the day after she took Children's Motrin. In Stevens-Johnson syndrome, epidermal detachment involves less than 10% of the total body skin area; transitional Stevens-Johnson syndrome-TEN is defined by an epidermal detachment between 10 and 30%; TEN is defined by a detachment greater than 30%.
