It is supposed to moderate or an even out an irregular heartbeat. It is prescribed to treat atrial fibrillation or A-Fib and Atrial Flutter or A-Flutter. The FDA announced on January 16, 2011, that the manufacturer reported that certain Multaq patients have suffered liver failure and required liver transplants. The FDA on January 14, 2011 released a statement stating that it was "alerting health care professionals and patients about cases of rare, but severe liver injury, including two cases of acute liver failure leading to liver transplant in patients treated with Multaq."

At least 200,000 patients have been prescribed Multaq since 2009. The FDA is continuing to review possible adverse reports and adverse drug interactions concerning Multaq.

Multaq includes a Black Box Warning required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The warning states that Multaq shouldn't be taken by patients who have a pre-existing history of severe or moderate heart failure or if they have been hospitalized for heart failure.
