Sadly, death, coma, and kidney disease have been linked to Reglan. Reglan is designed to increase muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract, so that the speed in which the stomach moves to digest food increases.
Reglan’s generic name is Metoclopramide. It is a prescription drug intended for short-term use for treatment of gastoesophageal reflux. It is also been prescribed for diabetic gastroparesis, which is a problem caused by the slow gastric process and which can cause intense heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.
Side effects of Reglan use has been reported including Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, which can cause kidney damage, delirium, fever, unstable blood pressure, and muscle-rigidity.
Tardivie Dyskinesia has been reported in patients using Reglan. This neurological condition includes involuntary rapid movements of the arms and legs as well as involuntary grimacing, tongue protrusion, and rapid eye blinking. Sadly, these side effects can remain for a great deal of time after the use of Reglan has stopped. If you have these symptoms, please contact us. We can help you even if you have not been diagnosed with Tardivie Dyskinesia. Reglan is one of the main prescription drugs used for gastro intestinal disorders and to manage gastro intestinal conditions.
About Tardive Diskinesia
Tardive Dyskinesia is a serious neurological disorder, which is manifested by rapid, continual blinking, involuntary movements, grimacing, and impaired restrictive movement of the fingers. Scientists believe that Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) occurs because the body has become unable to process dopamine, the neuro-transmitter in the brain. Unfortunately, there is no known successful treatment for TD. Oftentimes, our clients’ TD symptoms continue after they stop their Reglan use. Sometimes, the symptoms can subside over time. TD often is caused by long term use of certain dopamine antagonists, of which one is Reglan. Reglan is a neuroleptic drug.
Problems have been reported with the following types of Reglan:
- Reglan injection
- Reglan oral disintegrating tablets
- Reglan tablets
- Metocloprimide
The main purpose in Reglan’s function is to increase the speed of the movement of the stomach muscles in order to empty the stomach to the intestines as quickly as possible. There have been many cases of Tardivie Dyskinesia resulting in a patient’s inability to live a normal life. Sadly, oftentimes Tardivie Dyskinesia is irreversible and permanent.
Remember, Tardivie Dyskinesia is exhibited by the following side effects:
- grimacing
- lip-smacking or puckering
- rapid eye-movements or blinking
- tongue-protrusion
- involuntary repetitive motions of the extremities including arms and legs
FDA History of Reglan:
The FDA originally approved this common treatment for those suffering from nausea, vomiting, and heartburn from gastric reflex for short-term use of no more than 4-12 weeks. A large percentage of Reglan users have been prescribed the product for more than three months. Unfortunately, extended use places the patient at a greater risk of developing Tardivie Dyskinesia or TK. TK is a neurological syndrome caused by long-term use of a neuroleptic drug. TK symptoms range from mild to severe based on the rapidity and intensity of the involuntary movements.
Reglan was manufactured by A. H. Robins, a giant pharmaceutical company. Reglan was approved by the FDA in 2004.
On March 3, 2009, the FDA announced that the manufacturers of Reglan are now required to include a boxed warning on all Reglan drug labels listing Reglan’s substantial risk of Tardivie Dyskinesia. The purpose of the FDA’s actions is to notify patients and doctors about the drug’s risk before prescribing Reglan. Remember, there is no known treatment to Tardivie Dyskinesia. At best, patients’ symptoms can lessen. The label is associated with the chronic use of the Reglan. It is the FDA’s position that the risks outweigh the benefits of the use of Reglan. The greatest risks are to elderly women and to those who will use Reglan over an extended period of time. &
Unfortunately, Reglan has been used by over two million Americans. The most common side effect are the movement disorders.
