April 2012 Salmonella Outbreak / California Tuna Supplier Is Source Of Outbreak
The Food And Drug Administration (FDA) publicly stated on April 16th, 2012 that the Moon Marine USA Corp in Cupertino, CA, a major supplier of raw tuna used in sushi, was the source of the most recent Salmonella outbreak which has thus far sickened more than 100 people in 20 states. Moon Marine has begun recalling over 58,000 pounds of raw yellowfin tuna because it may be contaminated.
The tuna is used in spicy tuna sushi.
The majority of the illnesses have occurred in New York.
The tuna linked to the outbreak was imported from India. Unfortunately, the tuna can cause Salmonella which is a type of bacteria which can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps for 12 to 72 hours after infection with symptoms usually lasting 4-7 days.
The CDC (Center For Disease Control) reports that approximately 400 people a year die of Salmonella poisoning.
As of April 16th the FDA stated that the last outbreak was reported on April 11th.
Victims started getting sick approximately two months ago and the FDA soon confirmed it was an outbreak of the rare Barelly strain of salmonella. Sushi was suspected as the cause after some victims reported eating sushi before getting sick. The link was just established on April 16th.
The tuna product is known as the “Nakaochi Scrape.”
The tuna product found in several clusters of restaurants and grocery stores was frozen raw Nakaochi Scrape from a single tuna processing plant in India.

As of October 1, 2011, the Listeriosis outbreak which has been connected to Cantaloupes grown at a Colorado farm has represented the deadliest foodborne outbreak in over a decade. Thus far, the Center For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 13 deaths and 72 illnesses connected to cantaloupes grown by Jensen Farms. There will be more victims because itcan take up to two months once an individual has contracted the infection to begin showing symptoms.
Jensen Farms recalled millions of cantaloupes on September 14th, 2011 but not all of their cantaloupes were labeled Jensen Farms. Cantaloupes were shipped to at least 17 states from Utah to New York. The CDC states listeria is commonly found in water and soil. The Jensen Farms cantaloupes have been marketed as "Rocky Ford". Or, under the banners,"Colorado Proud."
The thirteen deaths have occurred in Colorado, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The illness also causes risks for pregnancies and the elderly.
CDC also reports infected persons have been identified in California.
Most ill persons are over 60 years old or have compromised immune systems.
Health risks include women who are pregnant.
