SSRI Birth Defects

A 2011 Swedish study in Sweden has verified the conclusions that anti-depressants known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) increase the risk of birth defects when taken by the mother during early pregnancy.
The first link began to be known in 2005 when the FDA issued an advisory warning of the link between Paxil and birth defects - heart defects.
Zoloft is the most prescribed anti-depressant in the United States with more than 29 million prescriptions sold annually. Zoloft is used for depression, obsessive compulsive behavior, social anxiety disorder in adults and children. Zoloft used during the first trimester of pregnancy increases the risk of certain birth defects.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), such as: Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, Wellbutrin, Celexa, Lexapro, and Effexor have been found to cause infant birth defects.
If you or someone you know took one of these anti-depressants and gave birth to a baby who suffered from birth defects, contact us immediately so that we can explain to you your legal rights. The New England Journal of Medicine concluded in a published article/ study that infants born to mothers who took Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Celexa, and other anti-depressant drugs during the second half of pregnancy had an increased risk of their infant being born with a birth defect. These birth defects include: Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension or PPHN, which is a rare respiratory disorder which can cause a newborn not to breathe correctly and obtain enough oxygen.
Mothers who take these anti-depressants during the last trimester, increase of the risk of their child developing PPHN.
We are investigating claims involving the following SSRIs:
- Prozac (Fluoxetine)
- Paxil (Paroxetine)
- Celexa (Citalopram)
- Wellbutrin (Bupropion)
- Zoloft (Sertraline)
- Lexapro (Escitalopram)
- Luvox (Fluvoxamine)
- Remeron (Mirtazpine)
- Effexor (Venlafaxine)
- Cipralex (Escitalopram)
Warnings have been in existence since December 2005, when the FDA issued a Public Health Alert advising pregnant women not to take Paxil during pregnancy. There was also a British and Canadian study which found that SSRIs taken during pregnancy are the cause of premature
delivery and of low birth weight.
In 2006, the drug companies were instructed to revise their labels to include warnings of life threatening birth defects of Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension or PPHN.
