In the March 30, 2006 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, a study was published that directly linked Tequin, to the development of diabetes and several disorders of blood sugar by patients taking the medication. Since its 1999 approval by the FDA Tequin (gatifloxacin), a product of Bristol-Meyer Squibb has been used as a prescription antibiotic for pneumonia, bronchitis, bacterial infections of the urinary tract, kidney and skin as well as several sexually transmitted diseases. The recent study conducted by the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto found that Tequin was the only drug of its class that had these side effects.

The study found that patients taking Tequin had a greater risk of developing low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) up to 17 times greater than with any other antibiotic. These risks were seen in patients with or without diabetes within a 30 day period. These changes in blood sugar levels were and are particularly dangerous to older patients.

On February 16, 2006 the U.S. Food & Drug Administration released a warning to healthcare professionals and patients regarding negative effects of Tequin as well as stronger warnings to be added to the product labeling by Bristol-Meyers Squibb. The warning noted that there had been “cases of life-threatening events” where “a few had fatal outcomes”. Also mentioned in the report was the increased danger from taking Tequin while Diabetic as well as non-Diabetics, including the elderly, patients with kidney trouble and those taking glucose-altering medications.
