Zelnorm RecallZelnorm is an approved therapy for the constipation causing form of the condition known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome which is a disorder which occurs mostly to women, causing abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, constipation, or both. Zelnorm is supposed to be used only by women. Zelnorm is a therapy for the constipation causing part of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Unfortunately, Zelnorm has been linked to serious cases of diarrhea, ischemic colitis and death. On March 30, 2007, the FDA recalled Zelnorm citing excess numbers of cardiovascular adverse events including heart attacks and strokes. The FDA has received at least 21 reports of diarrhea so severe that it caused complications such as low blood pressure and fainting, including hospitalization. There are further reports of ischemic colitis and multiple reports of similar intestinal problems. Many patients have died and have been hospitalized. The manufacturer of Zelnorm is Novartis. The generic name is Tegaserod Maleate. The date approved for the drug was July 24, 2002. The status of the drug is that it has been recalled as of March 30, 2007. The approved uses include Irritable Bowel Syndrome (women only) and chronic idiopathic constipation. Off label uses include panic, anxiety, bi-polar depression, lupus, arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and sleep disorders. Serious side effects include ischemic colitis, death, heart attack, stroke, severe diarrhea, and rectal bleeding.
