2019 Mercedes-Benz Seatback Failure Recall

seatback failure

Mercedes-Benz recalled 22,637 vehicles on February 26, 2019, because improperly locked seatbacks might fold forward in a collision, leading to injuries.

Seatback failure doesn’t always lead to a seatback falling forward. Seatback failure can also lead to seatbacks falling backwards. When this happens, front row seat occupants can be violently thrown into the back of the vehicle, or can even be completely ejected from the vehicle.

The California vehicle recall attorneys of Nadrich & Cohen are actively investigating cases where a vehicle occupant was injured or killed due to a defective seatback. If you or a loved one has been injured by a seatback failure, immediately contact us for a free consultation, by calling 1-800-718-4658.

How Do I Know If My Mercedes Is Part Of The Seat Recall?

The recall’s start date is April 26, 2019, as parts are not yet available for repairs. Dealers will examine affected owners’ seats and the seatback locks will be replaced at no cost if necessary. Mercedes owners can see if their vehicle has been recalled by searching for their 17-digit VIN here or here.

Not all vehicles of the above years and models have been recalled. Seats unaffected by the recall were made with front seatback locks which came from a different production batch. An investigation in May 2017 found that a defective batch of levers which came from a sub-supplier was the cause of seatback locks possibly not locking properly.

Honda, Tesla & Fiat Seat Recalls

Honda Odyssey

A similar issue led to about 800,000 2011-2017 Honda Odyssey vehicles being recalled in November 2017. Improperly latched second row seats could fold forward in a collision, potentially leading to serious or catastrophic injuries.

Tesla Model X

A similar issue also led to 11,000 Tesla Model X sport utility vehicles being recalled in October 2017. A faulty locking mechanism could cause the rear seats to fold forward in a collision, leading to injuries.

Fiat 500X

1,847 2015-2018 Fiat 500X vehicles were also recalled due to a similar issue in August 2018. A defective rear seat latch could cause the rear seatback to fold forward in a collision if the seatbelts weren’t engaged, leading to injuries.
