266 Californians Victims Of Salmonella Food Poisoning
266 Californians…and counting…have become the victims of Salmonella food poisoning since May, due to Salmonella contaminated eggs. Wright County Egg, the Iowa egg company responsible for this salmonella food poisoning outbreak is now at the center of the largest egg recall in recent history.
The company has expanded its nationwide recall on Wednesday to cover 380 million eggs. The nationwide salmonella outbreak, which federal officials say has caused the largest egg related recall in years, has stricken over 260 Californians with salmonella food poisoning.
The outbreak appears to have begun in May and is ongoing according to reports coming from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The salmonella outbreak occurred just weeks before the July introduction of new federal safety regulations designed to reduce the risk of salmonella in eggs.

CDC Tracked Salmonella Outbreak To Iowa
The CDC said on Aug 13, “There have been confirmed Salmonella enteritidis illnesses relating to the shell eggs and traceback investigations are ongoing.” The outbreak has been tracked to Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, which initiated the recall.
Wright County Egg distributes its eggs to wholesalers and food service companies nationwide under multiple brand names: Ralph’s, Lucerne, Albertson, Farm Fresh, Mountain Dairy, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.
California health officials report that the salmonella contaminated eggs have sickened at least 266 Californians. The recall covers eggs in their shells packed between May 16 and Aug. 13.

Salmonella Food Poisoning Plant Numbers
The contaminated eggs come in carton sizes ranging from six to 18 eggs and are marked with plant numbers P-1026, P-1413 and P-1946. Consumers should check their egg cartons for possible contamination, the plant number can be seen printed clearly on the side of the egg carton.
The eggs should be returned for a refund. Many of the consumers who have fallen ill traced the source of their contamination to a restaurant where they ate eggs.
“This certainly has the potential to be a very large outbreak, both given the apparent number of reported cases so far and also the fact that many of these eggs may still be in consumer refrigerators,” Caroline Smith DeWaal, food safety director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, told USA Today.
