8 Victims Presumed Dead After Amphibious Assault Vehicle Sinks in Ocean
San Clemente Island, CA (July 30, 2020) – A Navy training accident near San Clemente Island has claimed the lives of nine people. The incident occurred on July 30.
Fifteen Marines and one Navy sailor were aboard an amphibious assault vehicle as part of a training exercise. The vehicle began taking in water and sank.
Eight Marines were rescued, but one later died at the hospital. Two Marines were hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Two crew members were also injured in the accident.
Seven Marines and one Navy sailor went missing during the incident. After an extensive search and rescue effort that covered more than 1,000 square nautical miles, the eight missing service members are now presumed dead.
