Cal/OSHA Fines Amazon for Lack of COVID-19 Safety Training

Warehouses in Eastvale, Hawthorne Fined $935 Each

Southern California (October 6, 2020) – Cal/OSHA has levied $1,870 in fines on Amazon.com for coronavirus-related safety violations. The Eastvale and Hawthorne facilities were fined $935 each.

An investigation into the two warehouses began in May. Cal/OSHA found that the two locations did not provide effective safety training to employees, increasing their risk of contracting the coronavirus.

Various complaints alleged that Amazon did not promote social distancing nor did it clean and disinfect areas where infected workers had spent their shifts. Amazon also failed to inform workers about confirmed coronavirus cases. When one employee died in March, employees learned about it through the media rather than Amazon.

The fines — $935 for each facility — is the smallest an employer has received from Cal/OSHA for a COVID-19 violation.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and loved ones of the victims.
