Jose Santoyo Killed, Pedro Chavarin Injured in San Pedro Dock Accident

Fenix Marine Services Terminal Fined $80,000 for Safety Issues

San Pedro, CA (May 15, 2019) –One man was killed and another was injured when they were hit by an exploding tire at a Port of Los Angeles terminal. The fatal accident occurred on May 15 in San Pedro. 

Jose Santoyo, 58, was killed while he and a co-worker, Pedro Chavarin, were changing a tire on a top loader while working at Fenix Marine Services Terminal, on Pier 300. Santoyo was hit by an exploding tire. Chavarin survived the accident, but suffered serious injuries and underwent multiple surgeries.

Both men were maintenance workers and members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. Cal/OHSA investigated the incident and fined Fenix Marine Services Terminal $80,375 for multiple safety violations.
