Steven Carrillo to be Charged With Murder in Fatal Ben Lomond Accident
Ben Lomond, CA (June 6, 2020) – A sheriff’s deputy was killed and two law enforcement officers were injured during an ambush in Ben Lomond. The fatal incident occurred on the afternoon of June 6.
The sheriff’s deputy and two law enforcement officers responded to a 911 call about a suspicious van. The caller said there were guns and explosives inside.
When law enforcement arrived, the van fled and the officers followed. The van went to the driver’s home. When police exited their vehicle, they were ambushed by gunfire and explosives.
The deputy, identified as Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, 38, was shot and injured. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Another deputy was injured by gunfire or shrapnel. He was also hit by a vehicle as the suspect attempted to flee the scene. The third officer was shot in his hand.
The suspect, identified as Steven Carrillo, 38, was shot during his arrest. He is hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. He faces charges of first-degree murder. The incident is under investigation by the sheriff’s department and FBI.
