The driver of a tanker vehicle is dead after a series of fiery explosions on California Highway 99.
California Fire division reported that the truck was hauling about 9,000 gallons of fuel when it caught fire Tuesday morning, May 23, 2017, along Highway 99 near Atwater.
Witnesses reported that the truck burst into flames following a series of explosions. At this time it is unclear what caused the explosion.
CHP has identified the driver; his name has not been released to the public.
Authorities are concerned that due to the sizable amount of spilled fuel, there is a chance that some of the fuel runoff could contaminate area drinking water.
