Tree Trimmer Injured in Accident at Embassy Suites by Hilton
Palm Tree Uproots, Falls Over in San Diego Accident
San Diego, CA (January 23, 2020) – A tree trimmer was injured when a tree fell over at a San Diego hotel. The accident occurred on the morning of January 23 at Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego-La Jolla.
A crew from Arbor West Tree Surgeons was removing several palm trees at the hotel. The tree trimmer was working 30 feet up a palm tree when the tree uprooted. It fell over with the worker tied to it. It was a gradual but quick drop. The worker was properly tied into the tree and was wearing appropriate safety equipment.
The worker was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for a broken arm, broken leg and facial lacerations. He was released later that day.
The supervisor said the injured worker was a very experience tree trimmer and climber. The tree was inspected before work began and it looked healthy. It was shallow-rooted, though, and the worker fell with the tree.
Cal/OSHA was notified about the accident. Because no deaths, amputations or hospitalization were involved, it did not trigger an automatic Cal/OSHA investigation.
