Actos Bladder Cancer Lawsuits May Reach 10,000

California Actos Injury Attorney
Actos bladder cancer lawsuits continue to mount.

A new report suggests that Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the Japanese manufacturer of Actos, may face upwards of 10,000 lawsuits from patients who developed bladder cancer after taking the Type 2 diabetes drug.

According to the report issued by Bloomberg last week, the number of Actos bladder cancer lawsuits continues to increase daily as new patients come forward to file injury claims. Attorneys from all over the country have reported receiving calls from individuals who claim they developed bladder cancer after using the drug.

The lawsuits may be consolidated into a multidistrict litigation for pretrial purposes. Attorneys for both Takeda Pharmaceuticals and many of the plaintiffs have argued that the lawsuits should be consolidated to streamline the process and reduce costs. If consolidated, the cases could be heard in a federal district court in Illinois, Louisiana, Ohio, Alabama or another location.

Sales of Actos generated nearly $5 billion in revenue for Takeda Pharmaceuticals in 2010. The drug-maker saw a dip in sales in June 2011, after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued new warnings about the drug’s potential side effects. After reviewing the results of a ten-year research study, the FDA announced that Actos users have a substantially higher risk of developing bladder cancer if they take the drug for one year or longer.

Reaction to the FDA’s warnings around the world have been mixed. In France and Germany, health officials have pulled Actos off the market, citing the increased risk of bladder cancer as outweighing any potential benefits of the drug. The European Medical Agency, however, continues to show support for the use of Actos in treating diabetes patients when other treatment methods prove ineffective. The FDA is conducting an ongoing safety review of Actos but as of yet, there are no plans to issue a recall of the drug.
