Beware Of These Common Birth Injuries

Beware Of These Common Birth Injuries
Beware Of These Common Birth Injuries

When a child is born there is much more happening during the birth process than you realize when you are an observer and not a participant. It can be a grueling experience for the mother and the child.

There are many forces at work during the birth process it’s a blend of compression, contractions, torques, and traction. Injuries to the infant that result from mechanical forces (ie, compression, traction) during the birth process are categorized as birth trauma.

There is an average of 6 to 8 injuries for every 1000 live births in the U.S. each year. The use of obstetric instruments such as forceps can further amplify the effects of these forces or they can produce injuries alone if used improperly.

Forceps Can Cause Birth Injuries

Facial paralysis can be caused by applying pressure on the facial nerves by the use of forceps during birth. If the nerve is only bruised, the condition will generally improve within weeks. If the nerves are torn, surgery may be required, some birth injuries last a lifetime.

Brachial plexus injury better known as Erb’s Palsy is a paralysis or weakness of the arm caused by the stretching of the nerves in the shoulder during the birth process. Erbs Palsy occurs most commonly in large babies, frequently with shoulder dystocia or during breech delivery.

Nerve damage can be caused by excessively pulling on the baby’s arm during birth or by pressure on the raised shoulders during a breech delivery. Most babies will recover from their birth injuries within 6 months but those with severe nerve damage will have to undergo surgery but even then the prognosis for improvement is poor.

Lack Of Oxygen Can Cause Cerebral Palsy

During a prolonged and stressful labor, an infant can suffer a lack of oxygen by being left in the birth canal for too long, this can cause cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a chronic disorder that is caused by trauma that can occur to the brain during birth.

Its symptoms are loss of movement and other nerve related functions. This type of birth injury can be caused as a result of the attending physician’s failure to respond in a timely and effective manner to events occurring during the birth process.

Oxygen deprivation or bleeding within the skull can have a devastating effect on a newborn and can result in mental retardation, autism or epilepsy. It doesn’t take long for a devastating birth injury to occur during childbirth, sometimes seconds can be critical. Even cesarean delivery does not guarantee an injury free birth.

Soft tissue injury is most often associated with fetal monitoring, particularly with fetal scalp blood sampling for pH or fetal scalp electrode for fetal heart monitoring, which has a low incidence of hemorrhage, infection, or abscess at the site of sampling.
