School Bus Malfunction Leaves 20 Students Hospitalized

California school bus accident attorney Twenty students have been hospitalized following a school bus accident near Lake Arrowhead.

This latest school bus accident marks the third time students have been injured in the past three weeks. On October 12, five students were injured in a bus accident near Dixon when the driver attempted to pass a tractor, causing the bus to overturn. Two other students and the driver were injured in an accident near Fresno on October 14 when their school bus was struck by an SUV.

According to police reports, the Lake Arrowhead bus accident stemmed from a mechanical failure rather than a collision with another vehicle. The California Highway Patrol reports that the heater core on the bus malfunctioned, causing hot water from the radiator to splash onto the students’ legs. Twenty students were taken to three area hospitals to receive treatment for burn-related injuries. Other students also complained of difficulty breathing due to the noxious fumes released by the burning heater core.

The bus, which was traveling to Mary Putnam Henck Intermediate School in Lake Arrowhead, was carrying approximately 50 students at the time the accident occurred.

A commercial vehicle inspector from the California Highway Patrol’s Inland Division in San Bernardino was called in to investigate the accident. It was later determined that a clamp on the heater core came loose, which allowed the hot water to leak out.

According to school district officials, each bus will receive a full inspection following the accident to detect and repair any potential mechanical failures.

The victims, in this case, were fortunate that they received only minor injuries rather than more extensive burns.  The treatment for a serious burn injury can be almost as painful as the burn itself and in some cases, it can victims months or even years to fully recover.
