What Caused The Getty Fire?
Authorities said the Getty Fire broke out at 1:30 AM on October 28, 2019, when a dried eucalyptus branch was ripped off of a tree by high winds. The branch was blown about 30 feet into Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP) lines in the Sepulveda Pass, causing the lines to spark. DWP, unlike PG&E and Southern California Edison, doesn’t shut off power to customers before or during wind events. Video footage showed the branch breaking off the tree and sparking the fire. The branch was found near 1901 N. Sepulveda Blvd., according to authorities.
The Getty Fire broke out along the 405 Freeway close to the Getty Center and then spread to the west and south, stopping traffic on the 405 and quickly burning over 600 acres. Nearly 2600 DWP customers lost power as a result of the fire. Twelve structures were destroyed by the fire, and an additional five were damaged. The fire was 39% contained as of October 31, 2019.
