California’s Most Sensational Bicycle Accident
Dr Christopher Thompson, the California doctor that assaulted two bicyclists by pulling in front of them with his car and slamming on the brakes, was recently sentenced to 5 years in state prison for mayhem; assault with a deadly weapon, his car; battery with serious injury; and reckless driving causing injury.
The judge that sentenced Dr Thompson, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Scott T. Millington called the case a “wake-up call” to motorists and cyclists alike. The judge sent a message to local governments urging them to provide more bike lanes for cyclists.
Dr Thompson, while cuffed to the court chair, wept as he apologized to the injured cyclists shortly before his sentencing.”I would like to apologize deeply, profoundly from the bottom of my heart,” he told them, his voice breaking.
Dr Thompson Says It Was Just Bicycle Accident
The story began on a narrow winding Brentwood road on the 4th of July two years ago when a group of cyclists had a verbal confrontation with Dr Thompson. The confrontation escalated according to Dr Thompson when the cyclists cursed him and refused to ride in single file.
Dr Thompson said the homeowners in the Mandeville Canyon community, where the incident occurred, had been having trouble with the cyclists in the past. Dr Thompson said he pulled around them and stopped to take a photo of the cyclists, that’s when two of the cyclists ran into his car.
One of the cyclists was severely injured with broken teeth, and severe facial cuts and lacerations after slamming into the rear window of the doctor’s vehicle. The other cyclist suffered a shoulder separation after hitting the sidewalk. Witnesses testified Thompson had a history of run-ins with other cyclists. The jury sided with the cyclists in believing that the doctor purposely injured the cyclists. The judge said the defendant hadn’t shown remorse for what he had done as he handed down the 5 year sentence.
Dr Thompson cited the bible as he urged the residents of his community to come together in peace when he said, “If my incident shows anything it’s that confrontation leads to an escalation of hostilities.” this story has finally ended and it’s considered the most sensational bicycle accident in recent memory.
