More than 40 million people in the United States suffer from arthritis, with 1.5 million Americans suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition caused the immune system. Those with this condition often experience significant joint pain. In some cases, rheumatoid arthritis can shorten a person’s lifespan by 10-15 years. Many rheumatoid arthritis patients treat their condition with medication, including the popular drug Actemra. Unfortunately, many Actemra patients have reported serious side effects. The dangerous drug lawyers of Nadrich & Cohen are actively investigating Actemra Lawsuit claims on behalf of patients and their families.
What is Actemra?
Actemra (tocilizumab) is an immunosuppressive drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010. It is typically administered as hour-long infusions on a monthly basis. In 2013, it was approved as an alternative use as an injection. It is sometimes taken with another drug called methotrexate. While Actemra has helped many people deal with moderate and severe forms of rheumatoid arthritis, it also comes with risks. Many users have suffered severe side effects from taking the drug.
Actemra Side Effects
Many of those who take Actemra experience common side effects, such as sinus pain, throat infections, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headache, dizziness, and itching. Mild stomach cramps and urinary tract infections are also common. Actemra currently carries a boxed warning for serious infections. Those who experience an infection while taking Actemra should discontinue use until the infection has been controlled. Those who use Actemra should avoid live vaccines, as this can increase the risk of infections.
However, Actemra use has also been associated with an increased risk for developing serious or life-threatening conditions including:
- Heart attack
- Heart failure
- Interstitial lung disease
Rare Actemra side effects have been reported and include stomach and intestinal ruptures, tuberculosis, decreased white blood cells and blood platelets, kidney stones, multiple sclerosis, sepsis, stomach ulcers, and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.
Deaths Due to Actemra
Actemra was marketed as a safer alternative to other rheumatoid arthritis drugs on the market. However, the risk of heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, and other serious conditions was higher for Actemra patients than for patients using other rheumatoid arthritis drugs. We believe that Actemra’s manufacturer, Roche, failed to sufficiently warn users of these serious side effects.
