Onglyza Side Effects Lawsuit | Type II Diabetes Drug Risks
For the last six years, Onglyza has been widely prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and has now been linked to significant health risks. Bristol-Myers Squibb and Astra-Zeneca worked together to develop and market the drug. A number of health issues have been associated with DPP-4 inhibitors, and more specifically saxagliptin (the active ingredient in Onglyza). DPP-4 inhibitors have been associated with an increased risk of heart failure. In 2008, the FDA began requiring studies to evaluate the safety of these drugs, including Onglyza. For several years, studies and reports have suggested such a connection, but the Food and Drug Administration is only now acknowledging that Onglyza can increase a patient’s risk of death from numerous causes, especially heart disease.
Onglyza Side Effects include:
- Heart Failure
- Pancreatic Cancer
- Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
- Thyroid Cancer
- FDA Report Findings
On April 14, 2015, the FDA released the results of a study involving 16,000 patients with type 2 diabetes, who used Onglyza. The study found that use of the drug increased a patient’s risk of heart failure by 27%. Moreover, the study found that Onglyza also poses a risk of death from other causes. Because of its findings, the FDA has recommended that labeling for Onglyza be changed to include a warning about the increased risk of heart failure associated with its use. Analysts believe that Onglyza sales could plummet by as much as 50% due to the release of the study’s results.
How Does Onglyza Work?
Onglyza was developed to treat Type 2 diabetes. Onglyza belongs to a class of diabetes drugs called DPP-4 inhibitors. DPP-4 inhibitors work by increasing the levels of incretin, which reduces the release of glucagon. Glucagon is a substance responsible for elevating a patient’s blood glucose level. By using Onglyza, insulin secretion increases and reduces the user’s blood glucose level.
