In August 2013, the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory Safety Alert requiring label changes in response to numerous reports of nerve damage accompanying the use of oral or injectable antibiotic fluoroquinolone drugs. Peripheral neuropathy is a nerve disorder occurring in the arms or legs. The FDA ordered the manufacturers of Avelox, Cipro, and Levaquin to add to their labels the warning of the risk of peripheral neuropathy side effects. The FDA has not identified any specific risk factors, other than the use of these drugs.

What are Fluoroquinolones?

Fluoroquinolones, pronounced (flor-o-KWIN-o-lones), are a class of antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections. Avelox, Cipro & Levaquin all belong to the fluoroquinolones drug class. These drugs are used to treat different types of bacterial infections of the skin, sinuses, lungs, or stomach. Avelox, specifically, has been used to treat and prevent plague. Cipro has been used to treat Anthrax exposure and is prescribed for other off-label uses.

Peripheral neuropathy can occur at any time during ingestion of Avelox, Cipro or LevaquinA study reported in the “Neurology” medical journal concluded that there is a 200% increased risk for peripheral neuropathy side effects to occur from users of fluoroquinolones. The study concluded that peripheral neuropathy can occur at any time during ingestion of Avelox, Cipro or Levaquin. This condition is unrelated to the duration of usage or the age of the patient. The condition can last for months, even after the drug is stopped. In rare instances, the condition can be permanent.
