The following tips can help you avoid a dog bite, for adults and children.

  • Never approach an unfamiliar dog.
  • Never run from a dog or scream.
  • Remain as still as possible when approached by an unfamiliar dog.
  • If knocked to the ground by a dog, roll into a ball, cover your face and head and lie still.
  • Never play with any dog without a capable adult present.
  • Report stray dogs or dogs displaying aggressive behavior to an adult immediately, then leave the area.
  • Don’t try to “stare down” a dog.
  • Never surprise a dog that is sleeping, eating, or has puppies.

In a 6 year study published in the medical journal PEDIATRICS, Jeffrey J. Sacks, M.D. and associates reported the finding of 109 bite related fatalities.The study found that 57 per cent of dog bite related deaths were to children under 10 years of age.

The dog bite study found that 22 per cent of the deaths involved an unrestrained dog OFF the owner’s property. The study found that 18 per cent of the deaths involved a restrained dog ON the owner’s property and 59 per cent of the deaths involved an unrestrained dog ON the owner’s property.
