Drag Racer Killed at Sonoma Raceway
Sonoma Raceway’s Wednesday Night Drags program saw its first death ever on the evening of March 28. A 75-year-old man was alone on the track when he raced his 1976 Ford Pinto on a quarter-mile strip. The drag racer was traveling at speeds of at least 100 mph when he hit a wall, killing himself. No other details were released about the crash.
This was the first death in 30 years. The program offers a safe and controlled racing environment. Up to 300 vehicles are allowed to race Wednesday nights from March to November, once they pass a technical inspection.
