Fentanyl Pain Patch Linked to Several Deaths

The use of patches for medication has been a great new way to control the release of medicine through the skin. For many types of prescription drugs, this trans-dermal method has resulted in medical breakthroughs for treatment.

The main benefit of medication being taken through a patch as opposed to an injection or in pill form is that it controls how much of the medicine is being received at any given time. It allows for controlled doses over time.

One major drawback is that when patches are defective, they result in too much of the drug being dispersed at any one point. As you might imagine, this could lead to some complications.

Recently, the pain patch known as Duragesic or Fentanyl has been recalled by its makers Janssen Pharmaceutical. Many are potentially affected by this and so we wanted to take the time to discuss what this patch is and why it has been recalled.

Duragesic Pain Patch

This pain patch is worn on the skin as a topical treatment for pain. It was intended to slowly release the drug, Fentanyl, to treat pain over time. Fentanyl is a strong opiate that can be very dangerous in high doses.

The patch was intended as a narcotic analgesic. The goal of the design of the patch was to allow its narcotic agent to be absorbed through the skin for up to three days.

Duragesic/ Fentanyl Pain Patch Recall

This goal has recently been discovered to have run into a design flaw. Due to improper sealing, the patch releases Fentanyl at too rapid of a rate.

The reporting of this design flaw resulted in two separate recalls issued from the pain patches’ manufacturer. As mentioned previously, the result of the rapid release of this drug is overdose which leads to several complications including death.

Pain patch overdose lawyers have been reviewing the evidence and working on several cases involving victims who have suffered from this design flaw. If you or someone you love has suffered because of these defects, contact the nation wide law offices of Nadrich & Cohen to see how they can assist you.
