Hydroxycut: Background Info, Dietary Supplement with Potentially Severe Side Effects
Iovate Health Sciences, the company that produced and recalled more than a dozen Hydroxycut products, asserts that the external review of the safety of the ingredients in their Hydroxycut products were determined safe to use. On hydroxycut information.com, Iovate claims to have sold “over 750 items in more than 70 countries around the world.”
This site also attests to the severity of the 23 cases brought to the FDA’s attention with the following statement: “While this is a small number of reports relative to the many millions of people who have used Hydroxycut products over the years, out of an abundance of caution and because consumer safety is our top priority, we are voluntarily recalling these Hydroxycut-branded products.”
Dietary Supplement Review
Iovate claims to have had a third party review and clear the dietary supplement safe for production and use by the public. In an earlier post, we mentioned the disparity between regulations and qualifying safety between drugs and supplements.
In the early part of 2006, blogcritics.org posted an article concerning the ingredients of Hydroxycut, their purpose and a review of the ‘at the time’ research/testing for the product.
This article questions the effectiveness of the product as well as informs the reader of gaps in scientific knowledge concerning certain components and their effect on the human body and its ability for absorption, distribution, metabolization and elimination. Read their article if you would like to read more about the ingredients of Hydroxycut.
Hydroxycut Lawsuits Information
While a minimum of 16 Hydroxycut lawsuits in a variety of federal districts throughout the United States have been ordered to be consolidated and precede as a multidistrict litigation (MDL), “there are also six other cases which were not included in the initial order, but may be transferred as tag-along cases,” reports aboutlawsuits.com.
While the cases each have their own “disparate facts”, they share some similarities and the U.S. Judicial Panel on MDL expressed the following: “U.S. District Judge Barry Ted Moskowitz is a judge experienced with handling complex multi-district litigation.”
