Police Chase Leads to Fatal Whittier Accident; Innocent Driver Killed

Whittier, CA (February 18, 2019) – A police chase ended in a fatal crash in Whittier. The accident occurred on the morning of February 18 at Newlin Avenue and Wardman Street.

A police officer saw a driver engaging in road rage and attempted to pull over the driver near Whittier Boulevard and Greenleaf Avenue. The driver refused to pull over and a short pursuit began. The driver attempted to run into several patrol vehicles. The driver then slammed into a vehicle at Newlin Avenue and Wardman Street.

The suspect’s vehicle burst into flames. The suspect attempted to leave the accident scene on foot but was captured by police. The suspect and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to local hospitals.

The suspect is currently in stable condition and facing charges of evading police and assault with a deadly weapon. He has been identified as Kevin Vargas, 34, from Santa Fe Springs. The other driver, identified as 61-year-old Isaias Cruz, later died at the hospital.
