A November 2018 FDA drug safety communication warned of serious side effects associated with alemtuzumab. Alemtuzumab is also sold under the name Lemtrada and Campath. Lemtrada is commonly used to treat multiple sclerosis. Campath is commonly used to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and T-cell lymphoma.
The FDA communication reports that serious, rare cases of stroke and arterial lining tears have occurred shortly after patients have taken Lemtrada (alemtuzumab). The FDA communication warns that these complications can lead to death or permanent disability..
The FDA, in addition to updating Lemtrada and Campath’s labeling, has also added the risk of stroke to their boxed warning. This type of FDA warning is its strongest, most prominent warning, which is also commonly referred to as a “black box warning.”
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with arterial dissection or has suffered a hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke after taking Lemtrada or Campath, you may be entitled to financial compensation.

Lemtrada Side Effects
The FDA said it has identified 13 cases of Lemtrada-related cervicocephalic arterial dissection, hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke worldwide since 2014. All 13 cases occurred within 13 days of Lemtrada use, and most of them occurred within one day. There were eight cases of hemorrhagic stroke, two cases of ischemic stroke, 4 cases of arterial dissection and two strokes of unspecified type. The mechanism by which alemtuzumab apparently causes these side effects is currently unknown.
The FDA said that cases of intracerebral hemorrhage and ischemic stroke have also been reported in patients who have taken Campath.
What Are The Signs Of Stroke?
- Sudden weakness or numbness in the arms, legs or face, especially only on one side of the body
- Sudden speaking difficulties, confusion or problems understanding speech
- Sudden vision problems
- Sudden dizziness, loss of coordination or balance or problems with walking
- Sudden, severe neck pain or headache
What Are The Signs Of An Arterial Dissection?
Persistent neck pain, along the side of neck upwards toward the edge of the eye

The FDA recommends that emergency treatment be sought whenever Lemtrada, Campath or alemtuzumab patients display any of the above symptoms, which can be indicative of stroke or arterial dissection.
