LA Car Accident Leaves Jewish Activist Dead, Rabbi Critically Injuried
Rabbi Samuel Jacobs, 59, remains in critical condition following a car accident in Los Angeles which left a noted Jewish activist dead.
Jacobs and 88-year-old Berish Landau, a popular figure in L.A.’s Hasidic community, were struck by a 1999 Plymouth Voyager as they were crossing at the intersection of Oakwood and La Brea Boulevard. Both men were taken to Cedars-Sinai Hospital, where Landau of his injuries. The two men were on their way to morning services early Tuesday morning when the accident occurred. According to reports, Rabbi Jacobs was assisting Mr. Landau in crossing the street, something he apparently did every day. Rabbi Jacobs, a highly esteemed figure among the Los Angeles Orthodox community, also teaches at the elementary school Yeshiva Rav Isacsohn, which is near the accident scene.
The driver of the Plymouth Voyager, a 27-year-old unidentified male, was also a member of the close-knit Jewish community. According to police reports, he was cooperative following the accident and appeared visibly shaken by the incident. The driver was not arrested and there are currently no plans to charge him in connection with Landau’s death.
