Victims have filed more than 100 lawsuits since the outbreak surfaced when a container of peanut butter at a long term care facility was found to contain salmonella contamination in January 2009.
On Jan. 17, 2009, the FDA advised the public to avoid eating any product containing peanut butter. The contaminated peanut butter was used in thousands of different products, including candy, crackers and cookies.
More than 3,490 products were eventually recalled, including millions of Kellogg’s Austin and Keebler peanut butter sandwich crackers.
Salmonella Typhimurium Kills Nine Consumers
The salmonella outbreak, with the same genetic strain of Salmonella typhimurium, sickened over 700 consumers across the country and was linked by its genetic strain to at least nine deaths.
The peanut butter was traced through its genetic markers to two plants owned by Lynchburg based Peanut Corp. of America in Blakely, Ga., and Plainview, Texas.
The products that were produced from the two plants were eventually linked to the nine deaths and the scores of illnesses.
The Food and Drug Administration later released a report detailing numerous violations at the manufacturing plants owned by Peanut Corp. of America in Georgia and Texas.
The FDA report also alleged that the company knowingly released a product that could have been contaminated.
Peanut Corp. filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy to dissolve amid fallout from the outbreak, along with its subsidiaries, Plainview Peanut Co. LLC and Tidewater Blanching Co. LLC.
