Natural Remedies for Food Poisoning

Food poisoning is a problem that impacts millions of Americans, and the pain can be enormous. Under the right circumstances, food poisoning can even be fatal, so it’s important to know where your food comes from, to only eat food that has been properly cooked, and to eat nutritious foods as much as possible.

Here are just a few basic tips that you might also want to consider:

  • Make sure that foods are properly refrigerated at all times. Read labels if you aren’t sure whether a particular food should be refrigerated.
  • When eating out at restaurants, check the health department rating in the window. In California and many other states, restaurants are required to post grades. If you see a restaurant with a low grade, eat somewhere else.
  • Never eat undercooked food. This should go without saying, but some of us tend to forget. Undercooked meats are especially dangerous.
  • Heed any food recalls. In recent years, we have seen recalls on tomatoes, spinach and other foods, as a result of bacterial contamination. Pay attention to these kinds of warnings.
  • Heed any expiration dates. Those dates are posted for a reason, so if your food is past its prime, throw it out. Also throw out any food that shows signs of mold growth or other contamination.

Chris Kilham, natural food researcher and ethnobotany professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, recently published his list of natural remedies for food poisoning. If you find yourself plagued with a bout of food poisoning, you may want to try some of Kilham’s simple suggestions for yourself.

For instance, Kilham suggests a strong cup of ginger root tea. According to Kilham:

Ginger is loaded with potent anti-inflammatory compounds that help to quell nausea and gastric distress. You can drink ginger tea as often as you like. Often, this does the trick. I recommend the Organic Ginger Tea from Traditional Medicinals, which can be found at any natural food store and at many supermarkets.

If herbal root tea doesn’t do the trick, Kilham recommends a Chinese herb called Andrographis. About 300 to 500 milligrams each day may quell the symptoms of your food poisoning. Nature’s Way, a maker of herbal medicine, manufactures a standardized Andrographis extract supplement.

But of course, if your food poisoning is severe, or if the symptoms fail to subside, visit a doctor at once. As previously mentioned, some severe cases of food poisoning can be fatal, and you don’t want to roll the dice with your health and well being. Bacteria like e-coli and salmonella can contaminate foods and wreak havoc on your health, so if you start to notice the familiar signs like fevers, chills and diarrhea, and they just won’t subside, call a doctor at once.

In some cases, you may also be entitled to monetary compensation for your food poisoning. Manufacturers and restaurants are legally required to maintain very high standards, as a matter of public health and safety. If you received food poisoning as a result of consuming a contaminated food, you need a good food poisoning attorney on your side.
