Pedestrian Deaths in San Francisco Spark Concern
Recently, there have been several pedestrian accidents on San Francisco streets. A week ago, a 51-year-old jogger was hit and killed by a Golden Gate transit at Van Ness Avenue and Lombard Street. This recent accident prompted pedestrian advocates to hold a rally at San Francisco City, with the aim of drawing attention to “traffic violence” on the streets of San Francisco.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Police Department reported a total of 28 vehicle-related deaths in 2013. Of these fatalities, 18 were pedestrians, and 3 were bicyclists. Leah Shahum, executive director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, notes that hundreds of pedestrians and bicyclists are injured each year on crowded San Francisco streets.
Following the recent string of pedestrian fatalities, community activists have urged city officials to make streets safer for pedestrians. Advocates want the city to build protected bicycle lanes, target professional drivers for more safety education and lower speed limit on certain streets.
Every year over the past decade, motor vehicles have killed approximately 20 pedestrians and injured 800 pedestrians on the streets of San Francisco. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration highlights that pedestrians were one of the few groups of road users to experience an increase in fatalities in the United States in 2011, with 4,432 deaths.
