America’s Best Bike Cities

Best Bike Cities

Did you know California is listed as one of the best bike cities? Bicycling Magazine’s October 2014 issue named its 50 “Best Bike Cities” with California regarded for several of its cities as being “the best.”  The California cities which made the list include: SacramentoOaklandSan FranciscoSan Jose, Thousand Oaks, Los Angeles and Long Beach.

California is a fantastic place for riding your bicycle

Oakland made the list at #27. The city stood out for its innovative new Super Sharrows, wide swaths of green paint which run through the center of a lane indicating it as a shared space. It has proved to be effective compared to too narrow roads for traditional bike lanes.

The city of Los Angeles also had been named a best city and is #28 on the list. A recent citywide bicycle count found cycling increased by more than 132 percent on the Los Angeles streets with new sharrows, and the city anticipates adding 40 miles of bike lanes in 2014.

Sacramento was #32 on the “Best Bike Cities” list. In 2012, the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates developed a website which was dedicated to fixing a dangerous intersection. Local officials then followed suit with the installation of the city’s first buffered green bike lanes.

According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, each year in California, more than 100 people are killed and hundreds of thousands more are injured in bicycle collisions. Unfortunately, these bicycle-related injury cases are increasing. California law provides a cyclist the right to use the road equal to any motor vehicle. Motorists must share the road with cyclists according to the law.

Being injured in a bicycle accident is very stressful. Nadrich & Cohen handles bicycle cases throughout California and is a member of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, the California Bicycle Coalition and the League of American Bicyclists.
