Mandatory Bicycle Helmet Laws

Mandatory Bicycle Helmet LawsMandatory bicycle helmet laws have always generated controversy. On the plus side, helmets do prevent head injuries. However, many bicyclists and their support groups are against all-ages helmet laws because they feel it makes the sport more dangerous and it could decrease ridership as a result because it takes the fun out of bicycling. This applies to adult helmet law requirements.

We believe in helmet laws. We believe that it is good public policy even though it may limit the ease of bicycling because we believe that the values of helmets outweigh the negatives. In the event of a cycling accident, helmets can help to prevent head injuries.

We would like to see a California mandatory all ages helmet law. There are currently other states that have such proposals in front of their state legislatures.

In California, there is no current legislation on the table for an all-ages mandatory helmet law. There have been discussions, but the proposals never came for a legislative vote.

Mandatory bicycle helmet laws Some organizations and experts believe that helmet laws would prevent, to a degree, many people from exercising because it makes exercise a bit more inconvenient. We disagree with that conclusion and believe that the benefits of mandatory helmet protection outweigh the inconvenience of buying and wearing a helmet to protect the cyclist from a serious head injury.
