Types of Burn Injuries

Over the years, our law firm has been greatly impacted by burn victim stories.  We have handled many major burn cases throughout California. We know that a burn is one of the most painful injuries that anyone can ever experience. When a burn occurs nerve endings are damaged, causing intense pain. Burns are a leading cause of serious injuries and deaths in the United States.

skin layers

First Degree Burns

These are superficial burns that involve only the outer layer of the skin. They are the most common and most minor.

Second Degree Burns

These occur when the first layer of skin is burned through and the second layer called the dermal layer is damaged but the burn does not pass through the dermal layer. We investigate second-degree burn cases if they extend over 50% of the body in adults or 10% of the body in children.

Third Degree Burns

Third-degree burns involve all of the layers of the skin. They reach down into the organs and go through the full thickness of the skin.  These burns are characterized by a black charring look with areas that are dry and white. Third-degree burns destroy the nerve endings. These burns require skin grafting.  When they heal dense scarring forms.

Burns to the face, hands, and feet are the most common. Burns to the face are very severe because they affect airway management to the lungs, throat, and eyes. It depends what percentage of the body has been burned. In other words, what percentage of the amount of the skin surface was involved in the burn. We need to know right away for our case criteria and how we will present the burn claim to the insurance company.
