Valsartan Dangers: 3 Things You Should Know

Several drugs containing Valsartan have been  recalled in the U.S. because they contain impurities which may be cancer risks. You may be eligible for financial compensation if you took a drug containing Valsartan and have been diagnosed with cancer.

  1. Valsartan Recall Explained

Some drugs containing Valsartan, such as drugs manufactured by Chinese drugmaker Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd and Indian drugmaker, Aurobindo Pharma, may contain the impurities NDEA, which is found in tobacco smoke and which the World Health Organization classifies as a Group 2A carcinogen, and/or NDMA, a chemical which is highly toxic to the liver and which the US Environmental Protection Agency classifies as a probable carcinogen.

NDMA is actually used to give rats cancer for cancer research, and is harmful in extremely tiny amounts. NDMA has seen media attention for several poisoning incidents involving its use.

  1. Not All Valsartan Products Have Been Recalled

Not all drugs containing Valsartan pose a cancer risk. Valsartan itself, if properly formulated, does not pose a cancer risk. Only certain lots of drugs containing Valsartan have been recalled. A complete U.S. Valsartan recall list can be found at the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website.

  1. Consult A Physician Before Discontinuing Valsartan Use

Valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Patients can suffer serious medical issues if they stop taking Valsartan, so, despite hearing of a Valsartan recall, patients should absolutely consult their physicians before discontinuing Valsartan use. Alternatives are available to patients who have been taking a recalled drug containing Valsartan, including an alternate generic formulation or a different angiotensin receptor blocker, or ARB, the same drug class of Valsartan.

There are eight ARBs in the U.S. market, as well as other non-A

RB blood pressure drugs which could make an appropriate substitute for Valsartan. Patients who switch blood pressure medication should monitor their own blood pressure closely as their blood pressure may respond differently to any replacement medication than it does to Valsartan.
