Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) announced a $13.5 billion settlement on December 6th, 2019, for victims of Northern California wildfires and the Oakland Ghost Ship Fire which destroyed thousands of businesses and homes and killed dozens of people. The settlement covers victims of the Wine Country, Camp, Tubbs, 2015 Butte and Ghost Ship fires.

Deadline To Make A PG&E Fire Claim

Fire victims have until December 31, 2019 to file claims. The deadline was extended due to the large number of eligible victims who had failed to file claims.

Once accepted by the judge overseeing PG&E’s bankruptcy, the settlement fund will go to victims who lost property and/or loved ones. Government agencies and attorneys will also see a share of the fund. The settlement is intended to assist victims who lack insurance or whose insurance was insufficient to cover their losses.

2019 PG&E Bankruptcy & Fire Liability

pge

PG&E declared bankruptcy in January 2019 as it faced $30 billion in potential liabilities. PG&E has already agreed to pay $11 billion to insurance companies and others who have paid out 2017 and 2018 wildfire claims. PG&E has also agreed to pay $1 billion to impacted counties, cities and other public entities.

The Camp Fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California’s history. It was also the most expensive natural disaster worldwide for 2018. The Camp Fire killed 85 civilians and injured 12 civilians and 5 firefighters. It destroyed 18,804 buildings and burned 153,336 acres of land. The fire forced the evacuation of 52,000 people, decimated the town of Paradise and inflicted $16.5 billion worth of damage.

PG&E told federal regulators in 2013 that an overhaul of the 98-year-old Caribou-Palermo line was planned. PG&E continued to propose the overhaul in 2014, 2015 and 2016. The overhaul still hadn’t taken place in 2018 when the line failed and sparked the Camp Fire.

Prior to the Camp Fire, the Tubbs Fire was the most destructive wildfire in California history at the time it occurred. The Tubbs Fire killed 22 people and injured one. It destroyed 5,643 buildings, burned 36,807 acres of land and inflicted $1.3 billion worth of damage.
