The Latest Meningitis-Steroid Update
As of this writing, the deadly fungal meningitis outbreak has caused 184 illnesses and 14 deaths in 20 states. Researchers believe that contamination is linked to a back steroid manufactured by a New England compounding company, a family operation with 50 employees, based in Massachusetts. The controversy arises as regulatory officials have discovered unused steroid vials with the fungus known as exserohilum contained within. The company has halted all operations and recalled all of its products. The steroid was provided to many clinics throughout the United States, and many other victims may still be out there.
Sadly, the NECC clinic responsible for the bulk distribution of the steroid has operated free of any regulatory oversight. Large pharmaceutical companies are required to have oversight, which is accomplished by various state administrative boards. In this case, it was the Massachusetts Health Department. Compounding pharmacies develop alternative versions of medicines, such as liquid forms of pills.
The product in question is an injectable steroid known as methylprednisolone acetate, and it has been used in 75 clinics in 23 states. One such clinic is Universal Pain Management in Palmdale, California, which ordered 400 vials per year. When shipments of these vials arrive, the clinic stores them away and use them as needed. Thus far, no patients of the Palmdale clinic have been diagnosed with meningitis, but the matter is still under intense investigation.
The national defective medical products firm of Nadrich & Cohen is investigating this meningitis outbreak and is reviewing potential claims in all 50 states.
