Zoloft Heart Defect Suit Filed on Behalf of Infant
A Pennsylvania couple has filed a lawsuit against pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, Injury Lawyer News reports. The couple claims that their newborn daughter suffered severe injuries, directly resulting from the mother’s use of drug Zoloft during pregnancy. Zoloft is a popular antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class.
The lawsuit was filed as part of the ongoing multidistrict litigation (MDL) case playing out in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The couple seeks compensation to cover the child’s medical costs. According to the copy, their baby was born with “a hole in the heart”, also known as a ventricular septal defect. The defect is characterized by an abnormal opening in the heart.
Babies born with this condition may suffer numerous symptoms, including a bluish tint to the skin caused by blood oxygen-deprived blood. The lips and fingernails are most common.ly impacted. Victims may also suffer fatigue, rapid heart rate, breathlessness, and swelling in the legs, feet, or abdomen. The couple at the center of the lawsuit has had pay for a number of medical procedures to manage the condition, and the baby may require more surgeries in the future.
Zoloft is one of the most popular SSRIs on the market today, used to treat depression, but research has linked the drug to severe pregnancy complications and birth defects. As a result, Pfizer currently faces tremendous litigation. In some cases, Zoloft use has even been linked to infant death, and unfortunately, many women are still unaware of the risks. Pfizer is accused of knowingly concealing the potential hazards associated with the drug.
